EMG & Nerve Conduction Studies

This simple test can allow the physician to determine if there is a site of nerve entrapment causing your pain or numbness.  This test is commonly used to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, and radiculopathy.

Nerve conduction testing involves a small electrical stimulation of the peripheral nerve, and recording the response in the hand or foot.  This simple test only take a few minutes, and results can be available immediately following the test.  The morning of the test, it is recommended to not use lotions or moisturizers on the area to be examined.

Electromyography (EMG) utilizes a small teflon coated pin to record the electrical activity within a muscle.  Tell your physician if you are on blood thinners, as this may limit your ability to have this test performed.
